A dictionary definition provided by www.merrium-webster.com reads "the science of numbers and their operations, interrelations, combinations, generalizations, and abstractions and of space configurations and their structure, measurement, transformations, and generalizations." Wow! Math is all of that and more. Mathematics is such an integral and neccessary part of education for all students. So many of our career pathways lead to math and science fields. It doesn't matter what career students choose, math will be a part of that career. Math is also a part of every day life! Mathematics education needs to be encouraged and my hope is that all students will have a strong background in mathematics to enable them to be successful, contributing citizens with rewarding careers!
In Campbell County our teachers use the Everyday Math Program, which is researched based and field tested. It is a program that is aligned with the Common Core State Standards. The curiculum focuses on developing children's understandings and skills in ways that produce life-long mathematical power. Everyday Math is a spiraling curriculum, which means that students will visit and re-visit concepts throughout the program in order for them to retain the information learned. The program offers multiple methods and problem-solving strategies that students can choose to use. It provides frequent practice of basic computation skills. Everyday Math is designed to build and expand a student's mathematical proficiency and understanding and to help students become mathematical thinkers and problem solvers.
This is one of my favorite strategies! It's called "My Favorite No."
