Dear Future 5th Graders and Families,

Hello, I am Candice Kelsch and I will be your fifth grade homeroom teacher this year! I am sending this letter to introduce myself, give you a little bit of information about fifth grade, and get you excited about the upcoming school year. This is my eleventh year teaching and my ninth year teaching fifth grade. Prior to teaching fifth grade I taught Kindergarten and Preschool at Grant’s Lick Elementary. Prior to that I taught Pre-K at Basic Trust CDC, was a substitute teacher / Summer enrichment teacher for gifted students in several schools, and taught Gifted and Talented courses through Northern Kentucky University’s Explore More program. I also completed student teaching at Grant’s Lick with Mrs. Herald (my fifth grade team teacher at GLE) in fifth grade. I'm excited to be teaching at Reiley where my neighborhood kiddos and own children attend. I received my Master’s Degree in the Teacher as Leader: Reading program at NKU in December of 2012.

I am originally from Mayfield, KY. Did you know there’s a corner of Kentucky that it takes over five hours to get to?! I do :).  I have been married to Mr. Kelsch (Kent) for fifteen years and we have three very active children. Carson is 9 and will be in 5th grade (so weird that he will be my student this year!). Kensleigh (often referred to as KJ) is 6 and will be in 1st Grade. Cooper is 5 and will be in Kindergarten this year. He is on the Autism Spectrum, and I have learned so much as a teacher and Mom from him. In what little free time I have, I enjoy singing, dancing and playing the piano as I have for thirty years (man -I’m getting old). I love teaching, I love children, and I love watching our youth grow in independence and knowledge in an environment of love, logic and high expectations.

I’d like to give you a little bit of fifth grade information to help out this school year.  Your student will have a TEAM of teachers to serve them (and YOU) this year. Mrs. Esther Warnick, Mrs. Lynda Neltner, and Mr. Trevor Collinsworth and myself. Your child will have lots of virtual learning to do this year, whether at school in-person or at home. Because I'm encouraging independence and initiative, plus relationship building with students despite uncertain times, students may text questions throughout the school day 8 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. to 859-640-9772.  Because I expect so much from my students and their families, I make myself available to help with homework questions, reminders and needs of all kinds. I’m flexible and open to your possible solutions to address any challenge you may face this year. One rule that I ask all students and parents to abide by in regard to communication is this: THINK before you speak :). Is it T - true, H - helpful, I-interesting, N-necessary, and K- kind.

You are also welcome to correspond with us through e-mail. Personal messages are discouraged in class dojo due to weaker security protocol.

Get excited, because this will be a wonderful year for you! I am so looking forward to meeting you soon, and students, I am so looking forward to teaching you this year! Bring all of your school supplies on the eve of Party on the Playground.  Have a wonderful rest of the summer!

Sincerely,

Mrs. Kelsch
