The Cline Discovery Garden at Donald E. Cline Elementary received a $900 grant from the Campbell County Extension Office for the second year in a row! The grant money will be used to continue the gardening experience for the students. Last year, the raised beds were installed and the students planted fruits and vegetables such as corn, tomatoes, pumpkins, watermelons, zucchini, strawberries, peppers, broccoli, radishes, eggplant, lettuces and herbs. Students tended to the plants and then had harvest parties so they could taste the “fruits of their labor”. We are hoping to take our harvest to the Alexandria County Fair again this year. Last year our watermelon won 1st prize! The hands on learning have taught the students all about the gardening process, lifecycles of plants and the importance of nutrition.
