Group Counseling
An integral part of the counseling component of the Campbell
County Day Treatment Center program is group counseling. All program
youth participate in 2 to 3 60 minute group counseling sessions per week.
It is during group that program youth have an opportunity
to develop a number of critical and important skills. These skills include
problem solving, interpersonal relationship, cognitive processing, value
clarification, self-expression, critical thinking, future planning, career
and transition planning, empathy and self awareness.
Group Types
Group meetings consist of primarily 4 types of group sessions; Introduction
Group, Problem Solving Group, Psycho-Education Group, and Treatment Phase-up
Group.
Introduction Group- upon admission to the group, a group member
participates in a group session held to acclimate the new group member to
the group and group expectations. Each group member introduces themselves
to the new group member and gives a brief description of their history in
the program. Group members provide the new member with critical information
that will hopefully facilitate a successful transition to the group and the
program.
Problem Solving Group- this type of group session is focused
on assisting a group member with a problem they are experiencing. These
sessions allow group members to share their experiences in similar life situations
and encourages brain-storming to develop possible solutions and develop a
plan of action.
Psycho-Educational Group- these group sessions focus on providing
group members opportunities to review and discuss such topics as developing
problem-solving skills, identifying human needs, value clarification, anger
management issues, substance abuse, relapse prevention, suicide and depression
related to adolescence, life transition, and a number of other relevant topics
that will assist in their development.
Treatment Phase-Up Group- all day treatment youth participate
in a multi-phase system that includes certain group meetings to successfully
transition from phase to phase eventually leading to successful graduation
from the program. These presentations include Life Story, Behavioral/Cognitive
Cycle, Goal Strategies, Relapse Prevention Plan, Career Project, and Transition
presentation.
In addition to the above mentioned skills addressed in group, group members
develop a sense of belonging, a sense of competence, the promotion and enhancement
of a positive peer culture and a spirit of teamwork and cooperation.
