Building Better Brains: Foreign Language
<back to Building Better Brains

Goal:
To implement strategies and opportunities through second language experiences that shall enrich the learning and thinking environment for all Campbell County students.

Component Managers:
Kim Snowball, Diana Heidelberg

Component Committee Members:
Karen Girard, Shelli Wilson, Jessica Hartig, Judy Heilman, Renee Boots, Meredith Isherwood

Special thanks to Jacqueline Bott Van Houten, Ph.D., World Language Consultant, Kentucky Department of Education

Current initiatives that the committee is developing and implementing:
Establish a foreign language program using “Espanol Para Ti”
1. The committee previewed several Spanish video programs and identified Espanol Para Ti as the best, enriching video available. For the remainder of the 2003-04 school year the elementary schools will be given an opportunity to pilot the Spanish program. Full implementation will begin in the 2004-05 school year.
2. Teachers and staff will be given appropriate training and support.
3. The steering committee will continue to look at creative ways to close the foreign language gap between the elementary schools and high school.

Our brains have a window of opportunity in which to “best learn” new information. The window of opportunity for language acquisition closes between the ages of 10-12, based on the individual child. Therefore, it is important that CCS takes advantage of the early years where language acquisition is best developed.

Development of a second language will enhance the child’s English ability, improve performance in Problem Solving, and help develop a higher level of foreign language proficiency and achieve global awareness.
