Goal:
Community building is a critical attribute of an enriched, positive learning
environment. Utilizing all community resources helps to provide students
with a strong academic foundation and, in turn, builds trust, safety, and a
mutual respect. As integral members of this learning community it is our
responsibility to foster a positive psychological and physical climate in which
all learning is enhanced.

and implementing: Implement district-wide team building activities.
Create and maintain an intramural league for district staff.
"You can have the goal of having a credentialed teacher in every classroom,
but the effect will be blunted if you do not also focus on changing the culture and
working conditions of schools. More important, if you do not focus on the
latter, good teachers will not stay long--or come in the first place." -The
Moral Imperative of School Leadership. by Michael Fullan
Implement a district-wide volunteer program which encourages family/community
to volunteer at least one time a year in the schools.
Implement a district-wide volunteer program. Commitment cards will be printed
and available through PTA/PTO encouraging family/community to volunteer at least
one time a year in the schools.
According to a study recently released by Learning Leaders, a city-school volunteer
program, parents who give time to city schools are likely to give more time to
their own children. The study found that, "after serving as a Learning
Leaders volunteer, parents spend on average 27 percent
more time reading with their children and 22 percent more time helping their
children with homework than they spent before becoming a volunteer."
Encourage businesses/community organizations to “Adopt-A-Class”. Work
with the Literacy Component in “Read Across the County” ensuring
that each classroom has a partner in their literacy activities.
“Adopt-A-Class” – The committee will contact businesses/community
organizations to adopt a class. They will partner with classes throughout
the year on various “activities” that meet the needs of the partnership
developed between the two entities.
"When schools develop and implement strategies for promoting effective school-family-community
partnerships, the result is improved learning for all students and strengthened
schools, families, and communities." NCREL - Critical Issues: Constructing
