Classes in session
I’m happy to report that this week’s attendance is strong at approximately 92 % despite this week originally being slated for spring break. Our administrators and teaching staff are serious about using these days to cover curriculum which will be tested on the state test in late April. Though I understand that the decision to set a calendar that uses spring break time as possible make-up days is not popular with all of our families, I believe that most understand the importance of their children attending classes and covering as much curriculum as possible prior to the testing window. These make-up days are essential for us to stay on pace and be fully prepared. Education Commissioner Jon Draud has given his approval to move the testing window to later in May next year. This gives us more options for making up time before the testing window. The Board will review next school year’s calendar to determine if it is possible for us to not use spring break as make-up time in the future.
Budget improving
The latest news from Frankfort includes talk about adding funds back into the education budget that had previously been removed. It also includes talk of an increase to the SEEK formula and salary increases. This is good news for everyone is education but even with these revisions, Campbell County Schools and other growth district will receive less money this year than last. There is still time for improvements to be made to the proposed budget. Legislators have heard from superintendents and school administrators but they need to hear from you. Call or email or House representative and you senator and tell them what you’d like to see changed. The legislators serving Campbell County are:

Graduation dates
Many have already asked when graduation will be held. We have not set the date for graduation yet because we must wait until the possibility of snow and inclement weather has passed. We are required to hold graduation ceremonies after the last day so of school for students which is now May 23. Any more time out of school due to weather would change that last day of school. While the Board of Education usually sets the graduation date, this year they have given permission to CCHS Principal Renee Boots and me to select the date once we feel certain we will not have any more days off for inclement weather.
Want to make the decisions?
The deadline to be a parent representative on your school’s Site Based Decision Making Council (SBDM) is quickly approaching. The SBDM Councils consist of three teachers, two parents, and the school administrator. The councils control many decisions about their schools’ instructional program, learning environment, and staffing. Those who serve on the Councils have great influence over most school decisions which makes having strong candidates a must. If you are interested in serving, contact your school for more information and the registration deadline.

Kindergarten registration rescheduled
Kindergarten registration has been rescheduled for the week of March 31. Children who will turn 5 on or before Oct. 1, 2008, must registered before they can start the 2008-09 school year. Day and evening times are available at each school . Parents must bring the child’s social security card and birth certificate as well as provide the school with an immunization certificate showing all age appropriate vaccines, a school medical examination form, an eye exam and two forms for proof of residence. If you have any questions, please call the school your child will be attending.
Calendar
The closer we get to the end of the year, the more full the calendar becomes. The next month includes athletic events, school dances, and concerts. Make sure mark your calendar with all of the dates important to you. If you know of other events that should be added to the calendar, please contact us.
