CCMS Shoe Drive

shoe driveDear CCMS Students,

CCMS is currently having a shoe drive to help save lives that don’t have access to clean drinking water.  Unsanitary water is the number one leading cause of death world-wide.  So, bring in your shoes to aid in this cause!  Shoes can be in of any type and in any condition.  Whichever grade level brings in the most pairs of shoes, will get free outside time after their lunch!  You can hang out with your peers or play a game!  So, hurry and bring in your shoes as time is running out.  The last day to donate shoes is Friday, November 2nd.  So, go through your closets and bring in those shoes to help save lives!

Sincerely,

Ms. Baker’s I/E class

Campbell Co. School empowers students to think more about their own Safety

Campbell County Schools officials are using a grant of nearly $5 million to explore innovative ways to confront the lethal problem of school violence that have claimed the lives of students in places like Parkland, Florida. They are training students that were selected by their peers, whom are called student brokers, to talk about and teach how others how to stand up. The goal is for the student brokers to take a stand against bullying and to keep an eye out for potentially violent behavior.

Mason Appointed to Fill Vacant Board Seat

CAMPBELL COUNTY SCHOOLS- Mr. Rich Mason, of California, KY, has been appointed to fill the vacant seat to the Campbell County Board of Education for District #5.  Mr. Mason was one of two applicants who were interviewed by a designee of the Kentucky Education Commissioner Stephen Pruitt.  By statute, the commissioner of education is responsible for filling any and all vacancies to board office seats that occur between elections.  Neither the local board of education nor the district administration have any involvement in the selection of board appointees.

Mr. Mason was sworn in on August 1st and will commence with his board duties effective immediately. Mr. Mason will serve until the next general election which will occur in November of 2018, at which time someone will be elected to complete the remaining two years until the term is complete in December of 2020.

Mr. Mason has previous experience as a member of the Campbell County Board of Education, serving from January 2005 until December 2016.  He was narrowly defeated in the November 2016 election by Judge Tim Nolan, who resigned his post in April 2017.

Camp Camel

Parents of Incoming 6th Graders,

Hopefully you and your child(ren) have been able to enjoy some much needed time off already.  It won't be long before summer is gone and the kids are right back in the swing of school!

Camp Camel, scheduled for August 9th, is an orientation program for incoming 6th grade students. Students spend the day from 8:30-3:00 at CCMS learning about a variety of topics that will help them to be successful during their 1st year here.  Most importantly, Camp Camel gives them an opportunity to meet students from the other elementary schools as they all transition into being a "Camel".

Some of the topics covered in the sessions in the past include building tour/PBIS expectations; athletics/extra-curriculars; dismissal procedures; anti-bullying/school safety/OLWEUS; dress code; attendance; cafeteria procedures; study skills/organization; lockers/agendas/homework; IC/Schoology; basic dance and kickball.

Paper copies of the registration form were sent to the elementary schools to be sent home by the 5th grade teachers prior to school letting out.  In the event that you did not receive one, I have attached a paper copy.

We are all excited and eager to meet and work with you and your child this upcoming school year! Enjoy the rest of the summer and hope to see you at Camp Camel!

Prichard Committee for Academic Excellence Parent Leadership Training Available

The Prichard Committee for Academic Excellence will bring a new parent leadership training one-day “basecamp” to northern Kentucky in April. The camp will give parents a look inside public education in Kentucky and provide them with tools to effectively engage in their children’s school, said Helen Carroll, NKY parent leadership coordinator. Since 1997, the Prichard Committee has trained more than 300 northern Kentucky parents through the Governor’s Commonwealth Institute for Parent Leadership. GCIPL is a five-day training that gives parents a deep dive into public education, including the Kentucky Academic Standards, accountability, school data and school governance.

Last year, northern Kentucky superintendents suggested that Pritchard help parents and community members become in engaged in efforts to support achievement for all students. The Prichard Committee responded to the call and created this one-day training program, open to any parent in Boone, Kenton, Campbell, Pendleton, Grant, Bracken or Gallatin counties. The training will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. April 29 at the Kenton County Public Library in Covington. There is no cost and meals will be provided. Space is limited, so register soon at http://tiny.cc/gciplbasecamp.

Volunteers Needed for Operation Preparation

Parents and Community Partners,
In March, Campbell County Middle and High School will be holding Operation Preparation for our 8th and 10th grade students.  This is a time when we ask parents, community partners and others to come into the schools and talk with our students about what their post high school plans may be.  Of course we know students will often change their mind between 8th grade and graduation, but it is a way to begin the dialog and help them navigate the big decisions facing them down the road.  There will be two opportunities at the middle school to interact with our students. The first is March 10, where students will participate in a career fair type event.  We are asking people to come in and share information about their job. We will have talking points outlined for the presenters and you would present your information 4 times to 4 different groups of students.  The second opportunity at the middle school is March 24, at this time you will have the opportunity to meet one on one to talk with students about their future. We will have a brief online training for this event. On March 15, we will have a very similar day at the high school.  Please contact Linda Bates at linda.bates@campbell.kyschools.us if you have further questions. Click here to view registration information and times.

Hour of Code Hour of Code

This week, we are celebrarting Computer Science Education Week by promoting an Hour of Code.

What is Hour of Code?

The Hour of Code is an hour introduction to computer science, designed to show that anyone can learn the basics of coding and to provide an awareness for and participation in the field of computer science. Computer science/coding helps nurture problem-solving skills, logic and creativity. By starting early, students will have a foundation for success in any 21st-century career path.

To encourage students to give coding a try, the library is hosting a coding challenge. Every time a student completes one of the hour of code tutorials at the link below and brings in a certificate of completion for us to display, their name will be entered into a drawing for a robotics kit / instruction book. Ther is no limit to the number of certificates a student can earn and include in the drawing.

CCMS Summer Reading Assignments

The summer reading assignment for ALL 2016-2017 Campbell County Middle School students is below.  As part of our English-language arts course, CCMS designed a summer reading program that all CCMS students participate in each summer to aid our students in understanding the following:

• Reading can be an enjoyable pastime.
• People read for pleasure, not just to acquire information.
• Reading is a skill that improves with practice.
• Reading can be a family activity; families in which parents read inspire children to read.
• Reading is fundamental in providing a solid basis for academic achievement.

All CCMS students will read a minimum of one novel or book this summer that is at the appropriate reading level of that student and complete a reading log.

Campbell Nationally Ranked – 9th time in 4 years Campbell Nationally Ranked – 9th time in 4 years

CAMPBELL COUNTY SCHOOLS – Campbell County School District learned this week that Campbell County High School has received yet another national ranking. CCHS was ranked as one of “America’s Most Challenging High Schools” by the Washington Post with Campbell County High School ranking 9th out of all public high schools in the State of Kentucky.  Schools who are national ranked are given an index score.   The index score is the number of college-level tests given at a school in the previous calendar year divided by the number of graduates that year. Also noted are the percentage of students who come from families that qualify for lunch subsidies (Subs. lunch) and the percentage of graduates who passed at least one college-level test during their high school career, called equity and excellence, (E&E).

This is the 9th National Ranking for the NKY Campbell County School System in four years. (See rankings below).  The district is also classified as a Distinguished/Progressing District on Kentucky State Assessments.

Campbell County Receives 8th National Ranking in 4 Years!

Campbell County School District learned this morning that Campbell County High School has received yet another national ranking! CCHS received a Silver ranking from U.S. News and World Report ranking CCHS 17th in the State of Kentucky and 1606 in the nation.  A three-step process determined the Best High Schools. The first two steps ensured that the schools serve all of their students well, using their performance on the math and reading parts of their state proficiency tests as the benchmarks. For those schools that made it past the first two steps, a third step assessed the degree to which schools prepare students for college-level work.

This is the 8th National Ranking for the NKY Campbell County School System in four years! The district is also classified as a Distinguished/Progressing District on Kentucky State Assessments. WAY TO GO CAMELS!

KY Education Commissioner to Host Town Hall Meeting at NKU

Kentucky Education Commissioner Stephen Pruitt announced he will host a series of regional Town Hall Meetings across the Commonwealth to gather feedback from Kentuckians on how they define school success. The ideas and suggestions collected at the meetings will be used by the Kentucky Department of Education (KDE) to inform the development of a new and more effective accountability system, something Pruitt has listed among his priorities since the Kentucky Board of Education (KBE) hired him last fall.

The Town Hall Meetings are critical to this effort, and I hope parents, community members, teachers, students, legislators, business owners and concerned citizens will come to these meetings ready to share their thoughts and ideas,” he added. “Together we will create a new system that will ensure we do the very best for all our kids and provide them with a well-rounded education that will prepare them to be successful, productive citizens of the Commonwealth.”

Campbell County Middle School’s counseling program applied and was named an ASCA Model Program.  This is a very prestigious honor.

Congratulations to Campbell County Middle School and the Campbell County Middle School Counselors, including Erica Thomas, Kelly Crowley, Britane Swank, Staci Kolkmeier and Elizabeth Farris.  They have demonstrated their commitment to students and to the school counseling profession.

Pre-Algebra students from Mrs. Tobin's classes participated in a bridge building contest sponsored by KEEN (Kentucky Engineering Exposure Network). Students studied various bridge designs and then created truss bridges out of toothpicks and gum drops. The bridges were then tested for stability by placing their bridges on abutments and loading the structure with pencils until they collapsed.  Emma Bay, Hannah Kraly, and Morgan Turner built a bridge that held 122 pencils!  The students made many mathematical and science connections as they learned about the career opportunities within engineering.

Campbell County Middle School PTO Fundraiser

READY, SET, "GO CARD"

Dear Parents,

The Campbell County Middle School PTO is excited to introduce our new fundraiser, the GO CARD.  On Monday, August 19th your child will be bringing home a GO CARD pre-sale envelope.  Inside you will find details on the PTO fundraiser.  Please support the CCMS PTO! This credit card size card offers great discounts each and every time you visit the participating local businesses. The cost of the card is just $10.00.  The cards pay for themselves in just a few uses. You, your family and friends will save money for an entire year with this continuous, repeating coupon card.

The GO CARD is the only fundraiser that the PTO will have this year and we are asking that each student sell at least 2 cards.  The PTO will use the funds collected from this fundraiser to benefit all students at CCMS, with events such as ReadiFest, testing celebration and incentives, and of course the last day of school grill-out.

CLCs hit the Middle School

On your child’s schedule you may have noticed CLC in the ACT line of their schedule.  ACT is an area where we can list activities which your child may be involved in here at school such as sports teams, drama clubs, etc.  CLC is an abbreviation for Camel Learning Committee.  Our Camel Learning Communities will function as an advisee/advisor time where a group of 15-20 students within the same grade will meet with a staff member to discuss a variety of topics that pertain to issues that may encounter or be involved with while here with us at CCMS.

CCMS Summer Reading Program

As part of our English-language arts course,  CCMS designed a summer reading program that all CCMS students participate in each summer to aid our students in understanding the following:

• Reading can be an enjoyable pastime.
• People read for pleasure, not just to acquire information.
• Reading is a skill that improves with practice.
• Reading can be a family activity; families in which parents read inspire children to read.
• Reading is fundamental in providing a solid basis for academic achievement.

We are asking that all CCMS students read a minimum of one novel or book this summer that is at the appropriate reading level of that student. Your student’s English-Language Arts teacher will be providing the necessary materials for students to begin this fantastic opportunity, but we are also providing these documents to you electronically via the links below. Please feel free to contact any member of the CCMS ELA department for further questions (Note: summer break starts June 11 for CCMS faculty and the checking of school email may be sporadic).

8th Grade Band Ranks Distinguished

On Wednesday March 13th the CCMS 8th grade band performed at the Northern Kentucky Middle School Concert Band Festival and received straight Distinguished ratings from the judging panel. The 8th grade band was also recognized as an exemplary performing group, meaning they were one of the top three groups of the two day festival out of 28 other middle school bands from the Northern Kentucky area. This ranking puts them in very good company with Conner Middle School Band(who just performed at the state music educators conference - that's equivalent to a state championship) and Beechwood Middle School Band.
